The good news? You don’t have to sacrifice your taste to fit within your home renovation budget. With some creativity and savvy planning, you can transform your whole house into the sanctuary of your dreams without a budget blowout. 

Ever wondered how I turned our plain, builder-basic bathroom into the moody, luxurious retreat I envisioned, all while keeping the costs down? Well, get ready because I’m about to spill the beans on how I achieved those chic, elegant vibes without breaking the bank. The best part? This method can be applied to any renovation or build plans within your home. Let’s dive into creating champagne taste on a beer budget together!

First thing first. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Before building or renovating, look at how you could cut extra costs in every room. The first step is looking at each living space and determining where you are going to have high costs and how you could create significant savings in those areas. For example: 

The average cost of bathroom renovation items can vary widely based on quality, brand, location, and individual preferences, but here is what I found. 

The average cost for the things I wanted in our main half bath: 

1. Medium-sized arched mirror with black trim:
   • Price Range: $80 – $300
2. Brass sink faucet:
   • Price Range: $100 – $500
3. Brass toilet paper holder:
   • Price Range: $20 – $80
4. Brass hand towel holder:
   • Price Range: $20 – $60
5. Brass outlet covers:
   • Price Range: $5 – $15 per cover
6. Two brass globe pendant lights:
   • Price Range: $100 – $300 each (total for two: $200 – $600)
7. Wall-mounted toilet brush cleaner:
   • Price Range: $15 – $50

Total: $450-$1635

Here is what I did to have the bathroom I wanted in the most cost-effective way.

Start by creating a detailed list of all the items you want in your room and putting them together. This is the planning stage. From the arched mirror to the perfect pendant lights, jot down everything you desire. Don’t hold back – this is your dream space, after all. With thorough research, you can find items you love and compare them to find the cheaper options with the best quality. 

2. Watch and Wait:

Once you have your wish list, be patient. Keep an eye on your desired items and wait for sales. Apps like Price Pulse can help you track price fluctuations, ensuring you get the best deal possible at the right time. Timing your purchases right can save you a significant amount.

3. Get Thrifty:

It’s always a good idea to embrace the world of thrift stores, Amazon, Facebook Marketplace, estate sales, and garage sales. Hidden gems are often waiting to be discovered, and this is a great place to start. With a discerning eye, you can find high-quality items and great deals at a fraction of the retail price.

4. Take Charge with Fixtures:

When building, empower yourself by buying your own fixtures. This move can save you a significant amount of money. Inform your builder that you’ll be purchasing your mirrors, light fixtures, faucets, toilet paper holders, hand towel holders, and hardware. Builders typically mark up these items, and showroom prices can be significantly higher. Purchasing your own items is going to be your best option for finding better deals. By taking control of these purchases, you save money and ensure you get exactly what you want.

5. Communicate with Your Builder:

However, discussing this with your builder before construction begins is essential. Not all builders allow homeowners to source their fixtures, so finding one who supports this approach is crucial. This is a big job and clear communication is key – make sure your builder understands your intentions and is on board with your money-saving strategy for your new home. 

6. DIY Projects:

In the pursuit of creating a dream home on a budget, don’t shy away from a bit of DIY magic. Consider skipping out on accent walls or intricate details that can be easily crafted once you move in. Using your own materials and doing DIY projects saves money and adds a personal touch to your space. Whether it’s box molding, customized shelves, or unique decorative accents, crafting these elements yourself can turn your house into a truly personalized home.

By following these steps here is how I saved:

   • Price Range: $70
2. Brass sink faucet:
   • Price Range: $60
3. Brass toilet paper holder:
   • Price Range: $40
4. Brass hand towel holder:
   • Price Range: $25
5. Brass outlet covers:
   • Price Range: $14 (needed three of them)
6. Two brass globe pendant lights:
   • Price Range: $50 each (needed two of them)
7. Wall-mounted toilet brush cleaner:
   • Price Range: $34

Total: $371
