DIY Ikea Inspired Shelves Under $20

I kept seeing these super cute dowel rod shelves on Instagram. I finally found that most of them were from Ikea. That’s a problem for me because the closest Ikea is about 6 hours away, and if you have ever tried shopping Ikea online, you know that shipping will cost more than your items themselves most of the time.

So, what did I do? I went out to the garage to build some myself. I ended up scraping pieces to make mine for $7; however, if you have no scraps laying around and you are starting from scratch, it will cost you under $20 if you build using these same measurements.

It wouldn’t let me calculate shipping because this item is currently out of stock; however, even without shipping, you can see it would cost me over double had I ordered them online.

Even with the cost of wood at what it is today, I could still make these cheaper, so I got to work. Now I’m going to share how I built them so you can make your own too!

Tools

Lumber List

Cut List

  • (3x) Cut your dowel into 3 pieces at 21 inches long

  • (6x) Using your 1×3, cut 6 pieces at 4 inches long

  • (3x) Using your 1×3, cut 3 back pieces at 21 inches long

  • (3x) Using your 1×4, cut 3 bottom pieces at 21 inches long

Time to Assemble.

Now that you have all your pieces cut, it’s time to assemble.

  1. Sand all your pieces for a smoother, nicer look

2. Grab your (3) 1x4x21 bottom pieces and your (6) 1x4x4 side pieces

3. Use your nail gun to attach two side pieces to each bottom piece

4. Grab your (3) 1x3x21 back pieces and align then to the top of each side piece

5. Use your nail gun to attach each back pieces to the side pieces

You should now have (3) pieces that look just like this

6. Grab your (3) 21 inch dowel rod pieces

7. Align each dowel in the center/front of your side pieces

8. Use your nail gun to attach the dowel on each side of your side pieces

You are DONE!

Ta da!! Now you should have 3 beautiful Ikea-inspired shelves.
